The story starts when the naturalist and illustrator Edith Holden decided to create for the year 1906 a diary of the changes in the English country scene during the four seasons.
The journal (Country Diary Collection), which was written for her personal satisfaction, includes wonderful illustrations of the birds, flowers and wildlife scenes. These are accompanied by detailed notes analysing the flora and fauna changes, the arrival and departure of the bird and insect population, and in typical Englishness the weather. Most of her observations are from the Warwickshire countryside where she travelled through the country lanes on her bicycle, stopping to sketch when an interesting flower or bird took her eye.
Unfortunately Edith Holden died prematurely in 1920 aged 48. When her journal was published in 1977, it reflected perfectly the detailed images drawn in this very private chronicle from 1906. The book (A Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady) became an instant success, and spinning from it a merchandising program developed, including country diary bed linen, that was to become the major house wares fashion statement of the 1980s: THE ENGLISH COUNTRY GARDEN STYLE.
