"In many places the hedges are festooned with wreaths of black bryony and honeysuckle." - Edith Holden
About Country Diary
The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady is a naturalist's diary for the year 1906 in which Edith Holden recorded with words and illustrations the seasonal changes in flora and fauna of the English countryside. She included her favourite prose and poetry, and illustrated it with her own enchanting watercolours.
In 1977 Webb & Bower produced a full-colour facsimile edition of the diary, which faithfully reproduced all 192 hand-painted pages, capturing the sensitivity and charm of the original. A new edition from Top That! was published in 2006, beautifully recreating the diary.
Having celebrated its centenary in 2006, The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady is still a publishing phenomenon. When first published The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady was No1 in The Sunday Times bestseller list for a record-breaking 64 weeks, and to date over 3 million copies have been printed in 13 different languages.
